Bitcoin Island

A long-term initiative for bitcoin adoption

Why Lilla Essingen?

Lilla Essingen is one of Stockholm’s smallest inhabited islands, home to a local community and approximately 30 independent merchants.

Stockholm is home to the world’s oldest central bank and has been an early adopter of financial innovation, including the development of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). If innovation is part of the city’s identity, it is equally important to explore alternative monetary systems built on openness, decentralisation and resilience.

Bitcoin Island was created as a long-term initiative to explore exactly that.

The idea behind Bitcoin Island

The idea behind Bitcoin Island is intentionally simple:

To support a community where, over time, merchants adopt Bitcoin as a payment method — through education, support and natural adoption.

Bitcoin Island aims to become a place where:

  • Merchants can test POS terminals, Lightning payments and NFC tools

  • Shop owners can see Bitcoin being used in real-world commercial settings

  • Bitcoin payments become as familiar as card or cash

  • Both merchants and customers benefit from instant, global and borderless payments

Bitcoin for merchants

For local businesses, accepting Bitcoin can mean faster settlement, lower transaction friction and access to a global customer base, while maintaining full control over their payments.

Bitcoin Island focuses on helping merchants understand these benefits in practice, not as theory, but through real-world use and hands-on experiences.

Be Part of The Journey

Bitcoin Island is open to merchants, business owners and individuals who are curious about Bitcoin and interested in following or supporting the project as it develops.
